What's in your Hometown trunk?

How many of you have saved weird "stuff" over the years? I don't remember being overly sentimental about my time in the scouts, but I do have the sash. I guess that says something - what I'm not exactly sure.

And how many former girl scouts do we have out there?

Can you name the merit badges in all three columns and in all 5 rows?

What about those wing-things?

And, for bonus points. What was the troop number (not shown) to which girls in my neighborhood belonged?

  1. Anyone who wears a Girl Scout uniform to the reunion get a prize ... a special prize ...

  2. Oh, you're just trying to lure all of us 50-something girls (who are motivated by big prizes) to try and squeeze into uniforms that fit us in our pre-teens. Not fair - unless, of course, you wear your sliding shorts...

  3. Ellen and I were in the same troop. I recalled it involved babysitting for the leader's wild red-headed boys. Maybe Ellen can recall who else was in the troop. We did have Brownie's with Natalie Gunness's Mom as our leader; they lived by you Peggy.
I can only recall the wings were for our fly up ceremony (brownies to juniors?) The rest of the badges are a mystery.

  4. Oh my gosh Maggie! You had to mention that girls name....Natalie!!! I still have nightmares of her pulling off my veil as we were standing in the hallway at St. Joe's getting ready to go over to the church to make our first communion! I believe I turned around and smacked her a good one and eventually ended up in sister Joanna's office!

Anyway....back to the girls scouts as I calm myself down...I do remember us babysitting for the leaders children and I think her daughter's name was Dottie who was also in our troop. Little girl with brown hair and a lot of freckles on her face! Suzanna Lorber was another member, but other than that I don't remember anyone else. I do remember our leader lived on Woodside Ave.
As far as the badges, I'm with you Maggie...I don't remember any of them!

  5. Don't be fooled ladies. I don't think Mike's prize would be that big! Now if anybody wants to wear the Catholic school girl uniform......

  6. ....and are we to assume the same will be true about THAT prize?
Remember Tom, Catholic school uniforms come with those orthopedic shoes that are exceptionally painful when they deliver a kick!

  7. It's not the size of the prize, it's the [magical thought] behind it. Or something like that.

At 52 going on 53, I'm convince that my mind is officially mush. I just came back from a trip this week, and left my car key (my car was in the airport parking lot) in the hotel room bed table drawer -- yes, the hotel that I had checked out of that morning. Didn't realize it until I was 1,000 miles away, on a plane when I couldn't turn on my cellphone. How happy do you think my wife was having to drive an hour to the airport to deliver me the spare car key, then we followed each other home? D'oh!

  9. Now my Catholic upbringing is rearing its ugly head, and I'm going to expose myself as the fraud I am! If those wings were for a fly-up ceremony, I believe that's when I quit girl scouts to pursue my dream of becoming an equestrian. So, perhaps I didn't carry out the commitment that goes along with earning those wings...

  10. I was an undistinguished Girl Scout, failing to complete nearly all badges undertaken and failing to sew onto the sash the few badges I managed to finish. This was entirely my irresponsibility and not due to the admirable leadership of Beth Reeves' mother. Athena was in our troop too. Both she and Beth had much more distinguished scout careers, as I recall.

  11. Estelle, I had no idea. I thought you were actually a pretty good Girl Scout. We thought you quit because you had too many extracurricular activities. It was always fun hanging out in the Reeves' basement where the meeting were held.

I found my sash while cleaning out my parents' house a few years ago. Also found three GS manuals that were moldy and had be tossed in the dumpster unfortunately. Troop 127 ruled! Those little wings and patches are now quite mysterious to me. The tiny yellow steaming cup of coffee? Was that when I acquired my caffeine addiction?

Some of those GS-acquired skills have actually come in handy, for example, building fires when the power goes out. Also, when my boyfriend and I were first dating he was very impressed when I told him I could build a decent latrine using a shovel, branches, rope, and a tarp. That must be why we've stayed together 20 years.

  12. Wendy, thanks for the compliment! In truth, I was a slacker scout and a slacker student. I made up for lost time in college and beyond, though (on the student front, not the scouting, although I too can light a fire in a pinch). Good for you on the latrine building! Never know when that skill will come in handy. :-)
