Musical Tastes

What are the albums (remember vinyl?) you had WAY back then, that you still enjoy today? Are you still listening to the same genre of music that you enjoyed back in the 70's? How have your musical tastes morphed over the years?

This is still one of my favorites. My tastes tend to run toward the bluegrass, folk, country-rock genres; although I now also enjoy more jazz and rhythm and blues than I did growing up.

My iPod will be running constantly during my cross-country road trip to our reunion - and mostly music (although I promised myself I would give audiobooks another try).

My favorites? I'll be singing along with Asleep at the Wheel, the Byrds, Commander Cody, Greatful Dead, Jackson Browne, John Prine, Leon Russell, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Ry Cooder, Van Morrison, and Waylon & Willie, among others.

Who are your musical heroes? Does Tony's band take requests? Enquiring minds want to know!

  1. I went through a country phase in the '80s-'90s, where me and Debbie went through some Saturday nights when we didn't want to miss "Grand Ole Opry" on TV. We saw people like Vince Gill and Lori Morgan live in concert. Our best family vacation when our two daughters were young might have been to Tennessee -- Nashville (Opryland)/Pigeon Forge (Dollywood).

But musically, for me, it usually comes back to the '70s, and I often get mocked for it by friends (especially because of Barry Manilow). My car CD player has performers singing where the words are clear: Manilow, Streisand, Billy Joel, Elton John. I’m a sucker for schmaltzy love songs. But I also like people I've seen and not expected to enjoy, but did: Earth Wind & Fire comes to mind.

And all the years of the Beatles, of course. Abbey Road is still my favorite album, then 8-track, then cassette, then CD ever.

  2. lets see....im sure there will be plenty that this aging mind will leave out and then go..."Oh yeah...I use too LOVE this and that group"...but for now, what comes to mind is Bread,Simon and Garfunkle,Carpentars,Elton John ,Black Sabbath 'Black Dog-i think 'and last but definately not least 'The Beatles' for a few years when I dated my 1st love Mike O'Brien who would ONLY listen to the Beatles..and what I remember probably has one of the largest collections of their music and memorabilia .
I then went into Led Zepplin being my all time favorite ( seeing them 3x in Maddison Square Garden-dont worry I wont request 'Stairway to Heaven'...maybe) and Supertramp'Take the Long Way Home..and Fleetwood Mac 'Chains...I am now into music probably not too many familar with 'Michael W Smith,Toby Mac,Christafari, Newsboys...just to name a few and while Im working or needing a relax time..its Enya or Yanni for me !!!
PS everytime i try to post it says it was unable to do it the 1st time and i have to repost...if that happens to others just try 2x it always works for me !...even though there are very few posting...come-on alumni...it will help to familarize(*THANK GOODNESS FOR SPELL CHECK!) us all when we meet !!! :)

  5. Okay Peggy start playing the theme song from the twilight zone. The last 3 cd's I listened to before you posted this blog were Jackson Browne-Late For the Sky, Van Morrison-Moondance,and the best of Leon Russell. I have most of the Dead and saw them 4 times. I've seen John Prine twice and have two of his cd's. I've been to at least 20 bluegrass festivals. I love the music and everybody dances any way they want to. Perfect for me. When I got out of the Navy in 1978 I was going to school on the G.I. bill and I worked for a local bar band doing sound and lights. We opened a show at place called Rogues Gallery for Commader Cody. They used our lights so I actually did the lights for their show. After closing we all sat around the bar and partied to the wee hours. My only brush with fame. Good cd's for your road trip. Little Feat-Feats Don't Fail Me Now, Lyle Lovett- Joshua Judges Ruth, Bonnie Raitt- Luck of the Draw. Give me a good Ry Cooder cd to get.

  6. C'mon, Tom - what happened to your tastes for hard southern rock? And, CD's - for God's sake, where's your iPod, man???
Thanks for your suggestions; got it (Little Feat), have a different one (Lovett, Road to Ensenada), got it (Raitt). As for Ry Cooder - my brother Pete introduced me to him a long, long time ago. I have Boomer's Story, Paradise & Lunch, and Borderline (on vinyl), and got Pete's Ry Cooder CD's when he passed away. My favorite is Paradise and Lunch. I've been buying my favorite tunes from my old vinyl collection on iTunes, although Hudson (Jeff Roe) says he'll loan me his USB turntable some time; but do I want them recorded that way - scratches and all??? Hmmm...

  7. Peggy and Tom are speaking a musical language that is foreign to me. I'm not sure I want to go to there.

  9. I did not know about Pete. I'm deeply sorry. I lost my sister Val two weeks after our 20th class reunion. My heart is still broken.
As far as Southern rock you are right! My stacks are full of Skynrd,Allmans,Outlaws,Blackfoot, and SRV. And on a Sunday morning when I want to go to the beach early and no one else is moving I put on Edgar Winters White Trash-Save the Planet and crank it up till the windows rattle. That gets them moving!

  11. What...no Bob Dylan or Rolling Stones? And what about our NJ hero, Bruce Springsteen? Born To Run was not released until 1975 but he had a couple of albums out in 1973 including The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle which included one of his greatest concert closing songs, Rosalita! My musical taste still runs toward Rock, Blues and Folk and, while I still have not yet acquired a taste for Rap, I have come to enjoy some of the Alternative bands and some Country. In a few more years I'm sure I will switch over to all "elevator music."
