The Newton High Class of 1974 graduation ceremony was held on the football field, 35 years ago. I'm thinking it was June 12, 1974, a Wednesday, although it might have been the following night, June 13, a Thursday. In any event, can you recall what you did that night to celebrate after the graduation ceremony?
I’m fairly certain my post-ceremony activities included a stop with others at the Bottom’s Up bar in Swartswood -- remember, the drinking age then was 18 in NJ (not that I was quite 18 yet, but you know...). And I believe that there might have been parties at people’s houses, too, but can't recall where and who hosted them.

our bus driver ( I think his name was Sulley) would take a detour and take whoever rode the bus on the last day of school to Stewarts rootbeer stand for a free hotdog and rootbeer( I cant imagine that happening now a days !I had a graduation party at my house and my mother supplied the bottles of champagne...I recall 1 girl vomiting all over her rug and then walked right trough the screen door...guess that taught my Mom not to not give alcohol to underage 'youts'

ReplyDeleteMike, We went bar-hopping. It was John G, you, Sharon Pigula, myself and a few others. It was on a Thursday night -- two nights after I almost broke my hand on a fence on our overnight class trip to Fernwood.
But what always disappointed me, and no blame on Glen Gorrell, was I made a perfect throw from right field to home and Joe Lovett of Pope John separated him from the ball. I wish I played catcher that game, for I would have planted him in the dirt before home plate ... But we won and once a year for the last 35 I read many articles I saved in scrapbooks, the last being that game.
We almost missed graduation..Joe Santos and I had to deliver a package to Newark Airport and we were stuck in traffic on rt 80...we hauled back and made it just in time..I don't think I had to wait until AFTER graduation to celebrate because they were passing bottles of beer down the row I was sitting in for graduation!!!(great row to sit in huh?)
